Aura di Valerie Zaffiro 2019 Toscana IGT

Aura di Valerie is a brand concept that took many years to develop, as do the wines themselves. This is our first Super Tuscan.

Super Tuscans are typically produced in limited quantities and are often more expensive compared to other Tuscan wines. They are renowned for their ability to age well, developing greater complexity and refinement over time.

Super Tuscans have played a significant role in elevating the status of Tuscan wines on the global wine stage. They have become sought-after wines and have contributed to the diversity and innovation within the Italian wine industry.

The term "Super Tuscan" initially emerged because some winemakers in Tuscany started deviating from the traditional regional wine laws, which mandated the use of specific grape varieties and production methods. These innovative winemakers began experimenting with international grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah, and blending them with local Tuscan grapes like Sangiovese.

Super Tuscans are known for their rich, ripe fruit flavors, intense aromas, and robust structures. They often exhibit characteristics such as blackberry, cherry, plum, cassis, and spice notes. The use of international grape varieties in the blends contributes to their fuller body, softer tannins, and enhanced aging potential.

Due to their unconventional nature and departure from traditional winemaking regulations, Super Tuscans were initially labeled as simple table wines or classified under the lower-quality designation of "Vino da Tavola." However, their quality and international acclaim led to changes in the Italian wine regulations, and some Super Tuscans have since obtained higher classifications, such as the Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) or the more prestigious Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) or Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG).
