This unusual 17-year-old Tomatin, distilled in 2006, is a special Palo Cortado Sherry Butts bottling that falls outside the specifications of the standard commercially released Tomatin Sherry Collection. The bottle was held at Tomatin Distillery, and the distillery has confirmed that its 2006 vintage, 17-year age statement and Palo Cortado designation are correct, making this a particularly uncommon variation of the Sherry Collection concept. Palo Cortado—the rare sherry style combining some of the aromatic delicacy associated with Amontillado with the richer body of Oloroso—is particularly well suited to Tomatin's naturally soft, fruit-forward Highland spirit.

Expect a profile centered on dried orange, dark orchard fruit, toasted nuts and toffee, developing into milk chocolate, fruitcake, roasted Brazil nuts and warming spice. The finish should be long, relatively dry and complex, with black tea, ginger, polished oak and lingering nutty sherry character. Those notes are consistent with Tomatin's documented Palo Cortado expression, whose profile is described in very similar terms, although I would not claim that your special 17-year bottling has exactly the same maturation program as the standard 15-year version without further confirmation from Tomatin.
