Green River Distilling Co. is a historic bourbon distillery located in Owensboro, Kentucky. It claims to be the 10th oldest licensed distillery in the state. But for me, it will always be "The Whiskey Without Regrets" as the company artfully built a brand on the back of a quality product and an inventive stream of sloganeering. Closed down in the 1950s and then revived in 2016, it's now owned by the Bardstown Bourbon Company, and is reviving the historic brand with creativity. The full proof bourbon is 58.65 ABV, and is built on a mash bill of 70 % Kentucky‑grown corn, 21 % rye, 9 % malted barley.
Old fashion shellac, the official color of bourbon
Popcorn, varnish, peaches, roasted chestnuts
Blast of plums and pineapple, followed immediately by a fiery flare, then settles into a rich toffee roasting on the fire. Carrot. Smoke. Sour Tamarind. No sweetness to speak of.
Slow and low, flavor fading while the proof burn lasts longer
Green River Full Proof is a serious bourbon. It doesn't want or need to provide sweetness. Like a great pipe tobacco, sweetness is not a requirement. There is fruit but it is dried. This is a new take on high corn and is engagingly straightforward. I want to go out and try their other offerings to see how they have pushed other categories forward.
