W.L. Weller Full Proof is one of the most sought-after expressions in Buffalo Trace’s Weller family, built around the historic wheated bourbon recipe that substitutes wheat for rye as the secondary grain. Bottled at a robust 114 proof, it delivers substantially more intensity than Weller Special Reserve or Weller 12 Year while retaining the soft, rounded character for which wheated bourbon is known. Buffalo Trace describes aromas of vanilla, dark cherry and caramel, followed by caramel and toasted oak on the palate and a long finish of crème brûlée and chocolate.
Despite the proof, Full Proof tends toward richness rather than sharp spice. The palate brings dense caramel, vanilla, dark fruit and toasted oak, with the wheat contributing a broad, creamy texture. At 114 proof there is plenty of concentration and warmth, but this remains recognizably Weller—sweet, rounded and particularly appealing to drinkers who enjoy high-proof wheated bourbon.
The name “Full Proof” does not mean barrel proof. Buffalo Trace fills the barrels at 114 proof, and after maturation the whiskey is proofed back to that original 114-proof barrel-entry strength for bottling. That distinction is important: evaporation can cause individual barrels to emerge above or below 114 proof, so this is not simply whiskey bottled directly from the barrel at its exit proof. It is also non-chill filtered, retaining more of the oils and texture developed during maturation.
There is no secondary finishing program. The whiskey undergoes traditional Kentucky bourbon maturation in new charred American oak, with the emphasis on Weller's wheated mash bill and the unusual barrel-entry-proof bottling concept.
